Learning From The SingTel Experience: How To Repel Job Scammers

By Fiona Lopez

SingTel is revered as one of the premiere communications group not only in Asia, but all over the world. Primarily headquartered in Singapore, this renowned brand has visibility in more than 20 nations, with well-formulated investments and key operations meticulously tucked in place. It continues to make waves in the global telecommunications sector with its deck of ICT solutions which include voice, data and video services for distinctly different platforms.

The profile of SingTel may be perceived as unblemished. Last 2011, this reputation got bad publicity when it became susceptible to the attacks of job scammers. That same year, the company identified how its name got caught in a mire of false recruitment scams.

SingTel's battle with bad publicity started when it started receiving messages and inquiries from job applicants in Pakistan. These job candidates were obviously keen on getting updates from the institution. At this stage, the company knew it had a huge problem. The recruitment procedures remained a mystery, especially because the company has not been active in offering career posts to the public. Upon careful research, the popular ICT solutions-based company realised it had been caught up in the games of scam artists. These monstrous scammers had posed as recruitment authorities from SingTel and assured the applicants of bigger chances of getting interviewed and getting a job post if they paid the recruiters a large amount of money.

The scammers' ways of dealing with the job applicants varied. Some were contacted through email, some received copies of rewarding employment contracts. At the end of the day, the scammers were able to get what they wanted: ill gotten resources from innocent victims.

[[The unfortunate encounter of the Pakistani applicants two years ago clearly highlights one significant lesson: cautioned should be exercised when facing recruitment agencies. Verify if the agency you are cooperating with is a decent entity. A highly reliable and conscientious recruitment agency will lend a hand to you every step of the way, from the application process down to the contract signing phase, without robbing you of your precious resources.]]
