State of Washington's September 2012 Unemployment Rate at 8.5%

The unemployment rate for the State of Washington was reported at 8.5% for the month of September. This rate is lower (0.1%) than the previous month of August. It also breaks the most recent trend of rising monthly increases for the State of Washington. For September there were around 296,400 unemployed workers in the state, a decrease of almost 6,000 workers from August. The total number of employed workers was also higher by about 3,200 to an estimated 3.2 million individuals.

When compared to September 2011 there are currently about 18,800 fewer individuals unemployed in the State of Washington. During the last year there's also around 30,700 more individuals employed and a rise of roughly 12,000 people in the total civilian workforce. The impact of those statistics was a 0.5% drop in Washington's September 2012 the unemployment rate over the past year from 9.0%.

Although lower, Washington State's September 2012 unemployment rate remains above the national average of 7.8%. Nonetheless, while the national average had been mainly lower or unchanged for the previous few months, Washington's had been steadily rising until the September 2012 decline.

Like Washington, many other states in the area also experienced lower rates in September. The State of California saw a large decrease down 0.4% to 10.2% for the month. Nevada's unemployment rate was also lower by 0.3% in September (to 11.8%). The State of Oregon's rate lowered by 0.2% to 8.7%. Finally, the State of Idaho had it's rate move from 7.4% in August to 7.1% in September.

The results for Washington State's industries were mixed for the month. Washington State business sectors that had positive results in September were Construction, Leisure & Hospitality, Professional & Business Services, and Government. Industries that showed negative results in WA in were Trade Transportation & Utilities, Information, Manufacturing, Financial Activities, Education & Health Service, and Other Services. Mining and Logging was unchanged in September.

By percentage, during the past year the Washington industry with the largest overall employment improvement was Leisure & Hospitality (+4.3%). The WA business sector that experienced the largest decline over the past year was Information (-1.2%). Trade, Transportation, and Utilities was the major business sector with the highest employment numbers in September at around 539,000 employed. Closely following was Government at approximately 538,000 workers for the month.
