By Curt Allen

Arizona's employment statistics have been published for August 2012. The State's August unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.3%. There were around 250,000 unemployed people in Arizona in for the month. This is an increase of around 900 individuals over July. The number of employed in the State also fell in August by about 3,300 workers to roughly 2.75 million. However, this number was mostly offset by a subsequent drop of 2,400 in the total civilian workforce. Taken together, these numbers result in the static unemployment rate for Arizona in August 2012.

A year ago in August 2011 the unemployment rate in AZ was at 9.5%. The impact of the large rate reduction over the past year was approximately 37,500 fewer unemployed people in Arizona. Additionally, there are about 19,000 more individuals employed in the state from 2011 to 2012. Additionally, while the recent pattern for many states in the country has been higher recently, Arizona's unemployment rate has largely dropped for all of 2012 (with just a few exceptions). Compared to the national average Arizona's August 8.3% rate is just moderately (0.2%) over the U.S. average.

The major business sector employment numbers are another way to review the employment results for AZ. In August, these numbers were primarily negative. Among those down in August were Leisure & Hospitality, Mining & Logging, Construction, Manufacturing, Education & Health Services, and Government. Those that did enjoy up numbers were Trade Transportation & Utilities, Financial Activities, and Professional & Business Services. The Arizona business type with the largest (percentage) gain during the last 12 months was Construction (+6.7%). The Arizona business sector with the largest 12 month decline was Other Services (-1.8%). The major business sector with the most employed continues to be Trade Transportation and Utilities with approximately 485,400.

When compared to other States in the area, Arizona's August 2012 unemployment rate continues to be average. Higher than Arizona are the States of California (10.6%) and Nevada (12.1%). State's with lower rates include Colorado (8.2%), New Mexico (6.5%), Utah (5.8%), and Wyoming (5.7%).

Later this Fall the employment statistics for Arizona for September 2012 will be reported. Once they are we'll review the statistics and look at the trends for the State. Please understand that previously released employment statistics may be modified sometime in the future.
