Tips for Choosing a Moving Company

By Brentz Walker

You've sold your home, and will soon be moving to brand new digs. Finding a great moving company is essential, how should you go about it? You are, after all, entrusting them with all your possessions. When you hire good movers, you can have less of a headache that inevitably seems to come with moving. Because the moving industry in North America is unregulated, the industry has a reputation that suffers from questionable movers. This puts the task of finding a reliable mover solely on you. Researching the available companies in your area is a good idea, to find a reputable company.

Here are a few tips to help you on your way:

Ask around to find out what company that people you know have used, and get their recommendations. Look at a few companies and get a reliable estimate, talk to 3 or more. Once you've narrowed down three or four companies you want to check out, make appointments to have a rep from each one come out and give you a written estimate. The company must send a rep to your house and look at your possessions to give you a correct estimation; companies that try to tell you they can just estimate how much the cost will be without coming to your house are not the kind of companies you should hire. If they won't inspect in person, or the price they give you is strangely low cost, be wary.

If you are thinking about using a company, it can't hurt to give a quick phone call to the Better Business Bureau just to double check that they are not listed as unscrupulous. When companies are in a bad standing, you should move along and consider other options.

Don't go with a moving company that demands a giant payment before they do the job. The industry standard practice is to make full payment upon completion of the move.

Get written material from the company regarding their liability for loss or damage and any optional programs available. Get a copy of their policy that says what is covered and what is not if there are any problems during the moving process, this will spell out rights for the movers, and you.

Notify the movers of any stairs or other obstacles that may need careful navigation. If there are complications, this could increase prices, and it makes sense to have a good idea of the cost before the move.

Get estimates in writing, including the delivery date, and the name of the person you spoke with. Have a "not to exceed" clause in the estimate, and be certain that they are also what is called "binding". This will prevent unpleasant surprises at the end of the move.

Ask who's responsibility it is for packing of belongings that are to be moved. This could make a difference in the price, as well as in who's liable in the event of any damage.

Your things could be covered by your home insurance policy, be sure to ask them what happens if damages occur in transport. If you need to purchase insurance from the mover, make sure you get comprehensive coverage on a full replacement value basis.

Moving can be smooth and easy if you're prepared and have the right people doing the job. Research about the company you go with will pay off by having safer and more reputable service. And don't forget to advise your home insurance provider of your move! Your insurance provider can help you on choosing the best coverage for your new place, and will advise you on how you are covered during storage, or while your belongings are being moved.
